The Little Red Schoolhouse was...

...the life blood of the community.

Because interdependence in rural settings occurs due to isolation, there was a greater sense of community and values taught in the education system. This rural school supported the way the next generation knit into the community. I believe this topic is academically significant because this system was the stepping stone to the way our education system is today. My own cultural knowledge and the fact that I grew up in a rural setting, gives me some appreciation, but for the most part, the urban segment of my generation has very little knowledge of the historical education system in rural parts of Canada. Also throughout my research, I found it difficult to uncover detailed and recent articles written on the topic. This led to my decision to conduct new and furthering research in the area. I believe there is not enough attention given to how these schools developed their communities in culture and values. I believe also that this is somewhat of a silenced generation, because of a lack of evidence and research. And finally, I believe that community involvement in education enhances the life of any child.
